Expanding Your Niche: How to Stand Out and Thrive in the Vast World of Freelance Writing!
Have you ever thought about expanding your niche as a writer in the vast world of freelancing?
Then this is for you!
Having always been very passionate about writing, I always saw writing as a one way street and one time when I thought of looking to new opportunities to help me broaden my niche, one fear that gripped me strongly was the thought of losing my focus as a writer.
Here are several strategies that helped me broaden my writing niche while still maintaining my focus:
1. I identified and analyzed adjacent niches!
I began by evaluating niches that are closely related to my writing expertise I.e, as a book and article writer, I explored script writing, storytelling (fiction and non-fiction), organizational manual writing, academic writing, ghostwriting, editing and proofreading.
These are all specialized, yet connected fields which greatly helped me tap into emerging areas without completely abandoning what I already know.
2. I leveraged my existing skills!
Here, I was able to transfer my core writing abilities like research, structure, and communication across various topics.
This is easier to do once you are very comfortable in one niche already I.e, I used to focus more on topics related to spiritual growth for believers, as well as Profiling start-up and growing organizations, it was easy for me to transfer those skills and branch out to writing on leadership, self-discovery, creating scripts for visual contents, spoken word scripts and more.
Now, all these demand similar expertise as my first focus but offer different audiences and clients.
3. I developed a signature style!
It is very important for every writer to have and maintain his unique voice/writing style as this will make you stand out in multiple niches, I e, as a Christian writer with a knack for storytelling, I was able to pivot to script writing, leadership book writing, writing contents and more using compelling narratives as a powerful tool.
This increased my chances of being sought after by clients from diverse industries.
To be continued....
I trust this has helped you?
